Signs Your Air Ducts Need Cleaning

What is normal and what is not.

Most homes never need dramatic duct work. A little dust in the ducts is normal. So how do you know when your air ducts need cleaning? The EPA points to a few clear signs, and Sarasota’s warm, humid weather adds a few things to watch.

Signs to Look For

  • Visible mold growth on hard duct surfaces
  • Pests or droppings in the ducts
  • Ducts clogged with dust or debris
  • Dust or particles blowing out of the registers

How to Check Safely

Start with the vent covers. Use a flashlight and look just inside the register or return vent. You are looking for dark spots, fuzzy growth, droppings or thick, matted dust. Do not push tools or hands deep into the ducts. If you can see something that worries you, stop there and ask for a closer look.

Mold Is a Moisture Problem

If you do find mold, moisture is the cause. Cleaning without fixing the moisture means the growth comes back. In humid Florida, common sources are leaks, a dripping coil, a blocked condensate line or damp insulation. Wet or moldy insulation cannot be cleaned and should be replaced. The CDC says damp, moldy places can cause a stuffy nose, wheezing or burning eyes for some people, and people with asthma or mold allergies may react more strongly. Read more in mold in air ducts.

What Is Normal

Dust on a vent cover is normal. A light dusting inside the duct is normal too. Change your AC filter on schedule and wipe the covers now and then. That is often enough. Pet owners and homes near construction may see dust more often. That alone does not mean the ducts are failing.

What Is Not Normal

Dust puffing out of the registers when the system starts, droppings near a vent, or fuzzy growth you can see is not normal. These are the situations where cleaning is worth a closer look.

A Room by Room Walk

Take ten minutes and walk the house. In each room, look at the supply register and, where you have one, the return vent. Check the hallway return, since it often collects the most dust. Peek at the closet that holds your air handler for damp spots or water stains. Note anything odd, then compare it with the signs above.

Why Sarasota Homes See Dust

Pollen, pet dander and everyday household dust all travel through the system. Doors and windows opened on a nice day let more in. None of this means your ducts are in trouble. It means you live in a home with air moving through it.
